The Central New York (CNY) chapter met June 22 at Welch Allyn in Skaneateles Falls, NY for lunch and a panel discussion “Making it in(to) Tech Comm.” Eleven chapter members and guests joined chapter president Dave Daly and treasurer and program manager Bobbi Werner, who asked questions of five panelists related to their individual career experiences. Participants then asked questions too, and everyone discussed their experiences.
The group generated a list of places to find work and resources to help with aspects of contracting. The STC employment website was mentioned, along with the American Medical Writers website and Virtual Vocations. Ruth Thaler Carter’s yearly Communication Central conference and the blog An American Editor were highly recommended. Participants noted that Lionbridge hires technical writers. Social media is also a source of leads as well as useful information.
The Central New York Chapter has members in Syracuse and the surrounding area, as well as throughout upstate New York. Many are also members of the Rochester Chapter and membership in both chapters is encouraged. CNY Chapter meetings are free for chapter members. Others may be asked to pay a fee. The CNY Chapter has a key role in sustaining the long-time and vibrant network of technical communicators living in Central New York.
